★ what i've been reading ★

i found my copy of deep storm for free in a neighborhood library box. i picked it up because i really liked how compact and small the book was, and because the cover has a beautiful gradient from the orange red sky to the teal ocean and its' dark depth. i'm so glad it caught my interest because it catapulted me fully into sci-fi. i finished this book over the course of three days in february.

i love this book. as a stem major it was fun reading about science i understand being used to try and explain something unexplainable. i knew just enough to follow the science talk and not enough to become jaded. i love how child doesn't hold your hand trying to simplify it, adding a whole layer of believability.

the writing style is really pleasant and child has a way of building tension that just hooks you and pulls you in. descriptions are so visual and clear. i also really enjoyed the style choice of showing us the code they were deciphering. always makes me feel like i'm included lol. crane is an interesting character i really enjoyed following on this journey.

my second book by lincoln child, co-written with douglas preston. to be honest, i enjoyed reading the book, but probably won't read it again, which is why i put it back into the neighborhood library where i found it.

when i started reading it, i did not know that it's actually a sequel. there were hints but it definitely was readable without much prior knowledge.

the plot was fine. i didn't care for the supposed terrorism part and was pretty skeptical of the science of the rest. maybe it's my fault i didn't care about gideon's diagnosis since i had missed the first book. i did like gideon's and fordyce's relationship developing. i also found it funny how extremely 2010 gideon kept being described. it's also nice to have an mc in something action-y like this that actually cares if they traumatize people.

i was surprised to learn just how different this book is from it's ultimate movie adaption. book deckard is so much more pathetic and human than movie deckard. buying and keeping real animals as a status symbol was so interesting to me, same as mercerism as a religion. fusing with some sort of deified image of a man who keeps trying and trying even when hurt just to do it all over again. and feeling everybody else doing the same thing. "sharing" your good emotions for the greater good even if it means you feel them less. the concept of everything eventually turning into kipple. riveting stuff!

the replicants in turn feel so much more robotic. the scene with the spider in the kitchen was harrowing.
